Synopsis
The video opens to a blue sky and a tree blowing in the wind. The camera
slowly pans down the tree and cuts to a series of buildings and facades. The
streets are empty. Only the wind and the constant humming of distant traffic are
heard. Seen from below, a corner of the sky is visible next to a yellow and brown
building. A melancholic melody starts to play, repeating the same few notes over
and over. Close up: two hands are clutching one hand. Shadows from a pine
tree move over the surface of the black and white pixelated picture.
The video moves from one non-descriptive place to another. The absence of
bodies in human-made spaces is uncanny. On some walls hang posters: A gun,
a red drop, hands, a face, a blue drop, somewhere a digital printer is calling out
for ‘MAMMA’ to the rhythmic beat of the machine.
And the Earth Trembled uses emptiness as a disruptive strategy. It is a quiet
and slow-paced piece making use of filler scenes and printed posters to
contemplate the properties of the moving image.
